Norwich – It’s a Fine City!
If you are looking for a charming city that combines history, culture, and nature, Norwich might be the perfect destination for you. Norwich is the capital of Norfolk, a county famous for its scenic waterways and wildlife. You can explore the Norfolk Broads by boat, or enjoy the countryside by bike or foot.
Norwich itself has a rich heritage, dating back to the Norman conquest. You can explore two remarkable cathedrals in Norwich: the magnificent Norman Cathedral, celebrated as the most complete example of Norman architecture in England and one of the finest Romanesque structures in Europe, and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Norwich is, rightly, acknowledged as one of the most splendid Victorian Gothic Revival buildings in this country. Its stonework is exquisite, and its stained glass is some of the finest to be seen anywhere in the world. Saint John’s looks like the perfect example of a medieval Gothic church, but it was created at the end of the nineteenth century. Building started in 1882 and finished in 1910. Originally functioning as a parish church, the building was elevated to cathedral status in 1976, becoming the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of East Anglia.
Our very own Richard Maguire (1st Dan) is the Cathedral’s Learning & Heritage Officer.
Alternatively, you can visit the impressive Norwich Castle, home to a museum and art gallery. Norwich also has a vibrant arts and entertainment scene, with theatres, cinemas, festivals, and markets. Whether you are interested in medieval history, contemporary culture, or natural beauty, Norwich has something for everyone.
